The USTA National Junior Competition Committee recently made changes to the National Junior Tournaments Points Per Round Ranking System that will become effective starting January 1, 2012.

These changes will impact all junior players who compete in national tournaments and who seek a national junior ranking.

Click here for a summary of these USTA National Junior Competition Committee changes.

Because of this National change, a lengthy discussion among the USTA Middle States Junior Competition Committee members ensued as to how best to adjust our Middle States Junior Tournament Points Per Round System and it was unanimously voted that the Middle States Points Per Round Tables for 2012 will remain unchanged.

The other major changes for the USTA Middle States Section Junior Tournaments which will become effective starting January 1, 2012:

• The current seeding method for all Sectional SR Level 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles tournaments will no longer be done by using the "All Factors Method," seeding shall be done using the most recently published Middle States standings list of the division in question in the order in which players appear on the list.

• Seeding for doubles shall be done using the most recently published Middle States Standings List of the division in question. Teams shall be seeded in the order of their combined standings (e.g., Player A holds the #1 standing and Player B holds the #10 standing. The Team of A&B would have the combined standing of 11.) Teams that have the same combined standing shall be seeded in the order of the highest ranked player.

• Doubles sign up must be online only with confirmed partner. Both players must apply with partners name online. Late entries will not be allowed. Players who are selected for doubles and not selected for singles and does not wish to just play doubles must email the Tournament Director before the entry deadline. If a player(s) does not notify the Tournament Director of their intent, it is assumed the player(s) will play doubles.

• It is now mandated that a doubles tournament requires a minimum of 4 teams to make up a draw.

• It is mandated that all Sectional Level tournaments be offered with a thirty-two-player draw except for the Level 3 Sectional Championship that will offer a sixty-four-player draw.

• Suspension Point System: This is a system under which junior players are assessed points for unsportsmanlike behavior in sectional or national tournaments. A player who accumulates too many points is suspended from all sectional and all national play regardless of the level of the tournament. Players may also be suspended regardless of the point system if the players’ behavior is determined by the Junior Competition Committee to warrant such suspension.

• Boys and Girl’s 16 Intersectional Championships is a team competition. Three (3) boys and three (3) girls will be selected from the USTA MS to participate and represent the Section. USTA MS will also select six (6) boys for the Boys 18’s National Team Championship and six (6) girls for the Girls 18’s National Team Championship to participate and represent the Section. The Junior Competition Committee reserves the right if it is deemed in the best interest of the Section to select one (1) alternate for the both BG16 Intersectional and one (1) alternate for both BG18 National Team Championships. In the selection of an alternate the Junior Competition Committee reserves the right to deviate if it so chooses from the selection process, if its appropriate and in the best interest of the Section.
