Looking for USTA Officials
November 15, 2004 01:34 PM
We want you if...
You are a USTA member.
You have 20/20 vision (It may be corrected.)
You can attend a 1½-day school.
The nearly 80 certified umpires in Middle States (out of about 3,000 nationally) do mostly grassroots officiating – working at junior and college events as well as other local referee work.
New umpires go to school on a Friday night and Saturday. (There are also optional classes Sunday for further certification.)
Once you pass the written test, you start off locally as a roving umpire, officiating junior and some senior tournaments. Your job is to oversee a number of courts, making sure that play is progressing fairly.
USTA/Middle States is looking most for referees for junior, local MS and collegiate events.
What do you get out of it?
Talk to Berry Campagna, who has been an official in Middle States for many years. She’ll tell you how much she loves the camaraderie. She saw a need for umpires, then got hooked. “I absolutely love the game,” she says. I love to play it; I love to officiate.”
Get hooked!
