The third annual Middle States Tennis on Campus Section Championship will be memorable to say the least. Driving rain on Saturday and 40 mph win gusts on Sunday forced the 19 college tennis clubs from 12 different schools to seek shelter at three sites Lehigh University, Northwood and Winning Touch racquet clubs.
Despite the weather issues, the level of play was outstanding.
The 19 participating teams is an event high and the level of intensity picked up on day 2 as national championship berths were on the line.
“We’ve grown each year,” enthused Bruce Kisthardt, Middle States’ coordinator for the championships. “This is the best we’ve ever had.”
Last year, Villanova came out on top, besting Penn State in the finals, before finishing an astonishing fourth at Nationals. Penn State A grabbed the title this year, with Lehigh coming in a strong second, and Villanova and Delaware rounding out the final four.

Overall the level of competition was great with pool play coming down to one or two matches. Players enjoyed the camraderie, the tennis play as well as the dozens of pizzas that were devoured.
Jenna Sisco, a senior at the College of New Jersey was the raffle winner of a great USTA gift basket.
Penn State and Lehigh will receive automatic bids to the 2007 USTA National Campus Championship, to be hosted at the Carey Tennis Center, in Carey, North Carolina April 26-28, 2007.
USTA Middle States will also provide the third- and fourth-place teams travel stipends to the national championship, after their registration is accepted by NIRSA. Please note these teams will not receive automatic entry into the USTA National Championship and therefore must submit an entry form.
The USTA Middle States fall campus league winner will also receive an automatic birth to the USTA National Campus Championship. However, if the Section Champion is also the league winner than an automatic entry into the national championship would be awarded to the next place team. Therefore three different Middle States colleges can receive automatic births into the National Championship. Also only one travel stipend is payable per college. If a college has received an award the next place team would then receive the award.
All teams are eligible to enter the 2006 USA National Campus Tennis Championship. Interested teams should submit an entry form to be approved by NIRSA. Spots are limited, so register early.
